25% of all lorries on UK roads are carrying food.
Buying local food supports local producers and takes some of the freight off the roads, reducing CO2e, congestion, air pollution, road traffic accidents and road building.
Start with the most local sources, farm shops, farmers’ markets and local shops. Identify produce from your local area.
Next look for neighbouring regions of origin. If you’re living in the south of England, for instance, produce from France and Belgium may be nearer than Scotland. Avoid air freight food which has 100 times the impact of sea freight.
