The energy and resources used to produce food packaging causes CO2e emissions. This adds to potent methane released when biodegradable packaging rots in landfill.

Food packaging plays an important role in protecting and preserving food. The emissions from packaging are usually relatively low in comparison to the emissions from the food it contains. So take care that your food is protected so that you don’t waste it unnecessarily.  Look for returnable and reusable packaging.

Where possible and sensible avoid excessive food packaging. Choose low packaged food such as loose fruit and veg – their skins are their natural packaging – and meat from the butcher’s counter.  Avoid buying sachets or long life items packaged in single portions. Buy the bulk alternative. Compost any biodegradable packaging.
